I was so moved by the graceful power of Amanda Gorman's inaugural poem "The Hill We climb" that I wanted to channel her energy and the quality of her words into something I could teach in AP Lang, a poetry course or any literature-based class. 

 As you probably know, students love lessons that involve music and ones that let them discuss music or have some ownership in their topics.  This AP Lang unit is always one where students truly get engaged, all while learning new analysis techniques and practicing AP terminology.

Have you ever thought about the connection between Science and Poetry? Why is rhetoric important in scientific writing? I've been reading up and preparing this unit for quite a while, and it turns out that having students study the connection fits perfectly in the AP Language curriculum. All of the direct instruction, directions and details are present within this bundle. 

AP Lang Rhetorical Analysis and Writing:  In making this unit, I wanted to create a fresh way for students to analyze rhetoric and to produce an authentic writing-based project that would also be a demonstration of the skills needed to get the sophistication point on the AP essays.  In this unit, students are also practicing making their own Aristotelian appeals. With all of the non-fiction linked reading, they are getting further paced practice in gleaning text for meaning and strategy. I like that this project ensures student ownership in all of the choices they will make in their creation.
